How reliable are political polls?
Polls are powerful tools, but capture a moment and depend on the sample, question wording, participation and the gap between stated intentions and actual behaviour. Understanding their limits is essential to using them correctly.
How reliable are political polls?
They are reliable within their statistical and methodological limits. They are not infallible predictions: they measure statements collected at a particular time and can be affected by sampling, question wording, undecided voters, turnout and late campaign changes. Antonio Preiti has devoted several works to the potential gap between stated intentions and actual political behaviour.
What makes a good political poll?
It starts with a representative sample, followed by an unbiased questionnaire, appropriate collection methods and correct weighting. Quality also depends on which questions are asked. Sociometrica combines voting-intention measurement with questions about opinions, motivations and behaviour, because measuring how much support exists differs from understanding why it exists.
Why can political polls be wrong?
Future behaviour does not perfectly match a statement collected today. Errors can stem from sampling, undecided voters, differential turnout, last-minute changes or voters reporting behaviour that differs from their actions. Preiti has explored this through the electorate’s “deep mind”: some dynamics can only be understood by going beyond direct questions about voting intentions.
